What Are Laser Marking Parameters?

When learning how to use a laser marking machine, operators must familiarize themselves with the parameters or settings of the machine through the manual or training. Understanding the laser marking parameters and what they mean can be difficult, so we’ll explain the basics of laser marking machine parameters. While laser marking machines can vary, the main parameters that operators will most frequently adjust include the following:

  • Speed
  • Power
  • PPI
  • Hz
  • Pass
  • Z-offset
  • Air Assist

In many cases, the software will automatically adjust the settings in the machine based on the material being marked. However, operators must be familiar with these parameters and what they do.

What Are the Most Important Parameters?

While each parameter is important, the two most critical settings for operators are speed and power. You can set them between 0–100 percent and describe the laser’s output power and speed of the laser head.

The tougher and denser the material you’re marking, like hardwood, the higher the power parameter of the laser. A softer material (silicone or paper) will require a lower power setting. The faster the speed, the shorter the exposure time of the laser on the material. If you want more detail and depth in the marking, a slower speed will increase the exposure time.

What Are PPI and Hz Parameters?

Two other notable parameters for operators are the PPI (pulses per inch) and the Hz (Hertz, or frequency) settings. PPI determines laser pulses per inch for the marking or the intensity of the laser pulses during the laser’s path. Most machines have an automatic setting that will determine the optimal resolution depending on the material and other parameters.

Hertz describes the laser pulses per second. A tough, heat-resistant material calls for a higher Hz. A low frequency is best for fragile and flammable materials like softwood.
